Academic Time |
The academic time for each fellow is 1 day per week with the exceptions below. Academic time is a privilege, not a right and is subject to change by the program director without notice. Academic time is used solely for research purposes and related activities. The fellows are expected to be available on their academic days to cover the clinical service as needed. Under no circumstances should academic days be used as time away, for vacation, interviews, etc.
Minimum expectations for the year are completion of 1 manuscript and 1 presentation at a national/international meeting. To allow time for publication, the first draft of the manuscript should be completed by the end of February. If not completed by this deadline, academic time will be reduced to 0.5 days per week. No academic time is granted: - If one of the other fellows is off service (vacation, elective rotation, or any type of leave). - If away for any part of the week. - In the first one month of the fellowship. - Lack of active academic projects. - Clinical needs approved by the program director with or without advance notification. |
Academic Funds |
An individual academic fund (IAF) is a fund provided by the Department of Radiology to its physicians to help pay for expenses specifically related to the practice of academic medicine. The fund is usually used to pay for such things as meetings, memberships in professional societies, books, etc. The Department establishes such a fund for each of its fellows with the hope of helping them to begin their careers. One-year fellowships are entitled to $4,700, of which $1,500 are exclusively reserved for meeting/travel expenses. The remaining $3,200 may be used either for meetings, conferences or other educational purchases. Please see guidelines for IAF reimbursement before making any purchases.
All non-meeting related expenditures (i.e. books, computers, DVD’s) must be purchased by March 31st. |
Vacation |
Each IR fellow will have 20 working days off service per year. One block of time is reserved for personal vacation (15 days) and one for scientific meetings (5 days). In addition, compensation time (1 week) is given over the Christmas and New Year’s holiday weeks.
Vacation requests should be submitted in a timely fashion and are granted in one-week blocks. The only exception to this is to attend interviews. As indicated above, if a fellow is away for only part of a week, no academic day is taken. Fellows are not allowed to take more than one week of vacation per month without prior approval from the program director. Vacation should be coordinated with the other fellow in advance. Time away is not allowed in the first or last month of the fellowship. Exceptions require the approval of the program director. |
Sick / Compassionate /
|
One week of paternity or compassionate leave will be provided as required. However, the division follows ACGME guidelines and will not accommodate more than 6 weeks off the schedule in a calendar year (including sick leave). Any additional sick/compassionate/parental leave will be deducted from total vacation time or result in extension of the fellowship.
